The History of Clark County, Nevada

The area known as Clark County was annexed in 1867 from the Arizona Territory to the State of Nevada as part of Lincoln County. Clark County was formed in 1909 when Lincoln County was divided. From a population of 3,321, growth in Clark County remained slow until the Great Depression when government projects such as Hoover Dam drew laborers to Southern Nevada.

After World War II, legalized gaming and the warm climate continued to draw new residents to Southern Nevada. Today, the number of visitors to Clark County continues to increase with a record of more than 35,840,000 in 2000. Population rates have fared similarly, as the County has witnessed one of the fastest growing populations in the United States. The estimated population by the middle of 2000 was more than 1.4 million.

Las Vegas is centrally located in the Southwest, providing easy access to the west coast, Mexico and other regional growth markets. Beyond the neon there exists a vibrant community, a place to raise a family or a place to retire. Hundreds of civic, social, business and service organizations help make Las Vegas what it is today.

A year round favorable climate and a network of educational, recreational and social activities for seniors add up for a great place to retire.
